CSV motion for a “Smoke-free municipality” unanimously approved

According to the latest statistics on tobacco use in Luxembourg from the Ministry of Health, not only do 27% of people in the country still smoke, but smoking rates are rising again, especially among young people aged 16 to 24 (from 24% in 2022 to 27% in 2023).

In response, the “Génération sans tabac” (Smoke-free generation) movement was launched by the Cancer Foundation, together with its partners, with the goal of enabling children and young people to grow up in a smoke-free environment and for Luxembourg to have its first tobacco-free generation by 2040.

In this context, CSV Frisange submitted a motion at the municipal council meeting on June 26, 2024, for our commune to become a “Commune sans tabac” (“Smoke-free municipality”). The motion was unanimously approved by the council.

By adopting this label, our commune shows its commitment to protecting the rights of children and young people to grow up in a world free from tobacco use and its consequences. Possible measures include better signage and expansion of smoke-free zones, events to raise awareness about the “Génération sans tabac” initiative, and involving local associations.
