Our mobility is stuck or “A bus to nowhere”

The board of aldermen neither commits to a proper development of bike paths nor to decent integration with public transport—two points that were included in the CSV’s election program.

There are still no fully separated bike paths between our three villages. There’s also no complete link westward to the cycling network Dudelange – Krokelshaff – Bettembourg, which could connect to the Bettembourg and Esch/Alzette train stations. To the north, there’s also a complete lack of infrastructure toward Roeserbann and Hesperange. That would provide access to the national urban centers.

Regarding public transport, Aspelt and Frisange are relatively well connected via the RGTR lines on the Remich – Mondorf – Luxembourg axis, but Hellange is the only locality—apart from Obeler (< 200 inhabitants)—within a 20 km radius without a direct bus line to the city. Is that still appropriate today? Can people be encouraged to switch to public transport like this? Residents of Hellange must change at Bettembourg or Frisange. If the train or bus from the city is delayed—which unfortunately happens regularly—they miss the connecting bus of line 550 to Hellange. This results in a one-hour wait for the next bus during the “off-peak” hours between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.! Before the RGTR reform (2016–2022), there was at least a 30-minute interval between Aspelt and Bettembourg.

At least the people of Hellange are no longer completely left out, as a bus shelter was installed a few months ago at the “Bei der Kirch” stop in the direction of Bettembourg. It would be nice to have a similar shelter on the side going toward Frisange.

A digital display at the main bus stops showing the next departures and delays in real time, as found in other municipalities, would be a great improvement for our mobility.

During CSV interventions in the municipal council, the board of aldermen always hides behind the statement that the commune has no say in the matter and that full responsibility lies with the Ministry of Mobility and Public Works.

According to CSV, however, the board does have several options to intervene with the ministry and to work together constructively. Where there’s a will, there’s a way.
